Driven by fear or fueled by love?
Nov 13, 2024I invite you to pour yourself a cup of coffee or tea, grab a journal if you’re so inclined and curl up in a comfy chair. 🍵🍃
It’s time for a Magical Conversation before the holiday season gets underway.
The holidays often require a ton of emotional labor ...
i.e. not talking about X, Y or Z, seating So-and-So at the opposite end of the table from other So-and-So, cooking two versions of the same dish to accommodate dietary preferences, setting meal-times to work with everyone’s schedules …
... all in the name of peace.
Peace for whom though? Maybe yours? Maybe not.
Sometimes it’s less about the choices you’re making, and more about understanding the WHY you’re making ‘em.
Consider the last few years …
➡ How many choices did you make from societal pressure or family expectations?
➡ How many choices did you make from a state of obligation, guilt, shame or fear?
➡ How many choices did you make to keep the peace … at the risk of your own well-being?
The discord these choices create has a cost. Emotional. Mental. Physical.
This cost isn’t surprising. You know it. I know it.
We’re not new to this rodeo.
Which is exactly why I’m bringing it up today.
How old do you gotta be before you start to lead your life with a soft heart and a firm spine?
Meaning, you seek clarity and consciousness around your choices so you know, truly know, WHY you are doing what you’re doing, and you’re then doing it willingly and with an understanding and light heart 💖 ...
... instead of a body heavy with resentment. 🪨
Can you relate?
Now, you may still invite Aunt Gertrude to the family gathering this year, and you may even agree for the thirteenth or thirtieth year in a row to let her bring her ghastly raisin, carrot, mayo salad [if you know, you know 😆], BUT …
... at least you’ll be crystal clear that this choice is from a place of loving compassion, and not out of fear that you’ll start World War Three within your family.
One choice is driven by fear. The other by love.
👉 The fear choice creates inner friction, tension, stress, and mild resentment [or not so mild].
👉 The loving choice expands your heart, finds you smiling, still not eating the salad, but good-naturedly making space for it on the buffet.
Because you love Aunt Gertrude. And Aunt Gertrude can’t help but love her mayo.
As silly as this example might be, it applies to all of our choices.
The next time you have a choice –whether it’s about the holidays or anything else – I encourage you to pause and tune in:
1) What’s the emotion driving each choice?
2) Which choice feels best in my body?
3) How might I best honor my well-being?
I invite you to integrate this 3 question Magical Conversation practice on a regular basis, for small and big choices, as they’ll help you find clarity so you can make a conscious choice that feels truly aligned.
Bonus: your insights will lead you down a path to a deeper level of freedom & authentic peace ~ yours.
Hugs,
AmyK
